On-field rivals combine for lethal combination
Australian Rules: Gympie Cats players have found their feet after a successful training camp at Rainbow Beach on the weekend.
Cats men's coach Courtney Findlay said he was looking forward to seeing what the side could produce.
The Cats have merged with on-field rivals Pomona and Findlay said this was the perfect chance to do away with distinctions.
"There are no Gympie boys or Pomona boys, we are all one team,” he said.
"Having combined the two sides, this training camp was great to hopefully bring the boys together as one unit.”
Findlay said he was confident about the team's prospects for the 2018 season with senior players and talent from the southern states creating a good combination.
The Rainbow Beach camp was the first team building exercise for the side and will ease the transition for younger players.
Findlay was impressed with senior player Jack Cross's leadership on the weekend and said he would be an important part of the club's season.
"After Cross finished his training exercise he went back and helped a couple of his teammates,” Findlay said.
"It showed great leadership.”
When asked why he chose to take on that extra responsibility, Cross said, "I knew that kid was a youngster.
"I had a senior player do that once for me and this was my chance do that.
"If this kid can become a better player because of that, then I have done my job.”
Cross said he was confident in the players and believed they had the ability to possibly go all the way.
"We will be able to compete with the teams up north and we will give it a real crack,” he said.
This will be Cross's third year for the Cats and he said there was a different feel at the club this year.
"There is a different vibe compared to previous years,” he said.
"We are turning into more of a family as opposed to just teammates.
"When you put your body on the line for them and they do the same for you, it is more than just friendship.”
