Offenders rely on medical excuse for use

TWO Warwick residents facing court for marijuana possession were quick to cite medical reasons in Warwick Magistrates Court yesterday.

The first was Harley John Stokes, who was searched by police after they were informed he was selling drugs near Hamilton St on February 27.

Police prosecutor Ken Wiggan said a patrol crew investigating the information spotted the 20-year-old on Fitzroy St.

Stokes looked at the police car then put his head down and walked briskly the other way.

Police then conducted a search of the Warwick man and uncovered an aluminium foil packet in the pocket of his shorts.

Stokes admitted the packet contained marijuana and told police it was for medical reasons.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey told Stokes it was his last chance.

“After this, I’ll just go straight to jail time. You’ve been fairly warned,” Mr Manthey said.

Stokes was fined $600 with no conviction recorded.

A 46-year-old Warwick woman also cited medical reasons yesterday, after being caught growing four marijuana plants on February 7.

A search of her Wood St property by Warwick police had uncovered the pot plants in an overgrown section of the back yard.

Gayreena Ann Cosgrove admitted to police she had planted them and pleaded guilty yesterday to one charge of producing dangerous drugs.

Solicitor Clare Hine told the court her client used marijuana to self-medicate for a bipolar condition and cervical cancer.

Cosgrove was fined $600 with Mr Manthey warning her she was “definitely in jail territory after today.”
