FILM and television legend - and St Patrick's "old boy" - Michael Caton could be enjoying the serenity of a beer and a good film in Gympie come October after agreeing to be part of the jury for this year's Heart of Gold International Film Festival.

Caton, aka Darryl Kerrigan from The Castle, hails from Monto but went to boarding school at Gympie's Christian Brothers (which later became St Patrick's Catholic school), where his love for acting began.

He is most well known for his riveting and hilarious role as Darryl Kerrigan, and for playing Uncle Harry in the Australian television series, The Sullivans.

Caton has hosted his own shows including Hot Property, and starred in classic TV shows such as Stingers, Packed To The Rafters and Blue Heelers.

For his performances and talent, he has been inducted into the Australian Film Walk of Fame and won an Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Award for Best Actor for his performance in the feature film Last Cab to Darwin.

While the Heart of Gold says it is official Caton will be part of the jury in October, whether or not he will be able to visit Gympie during the festival is still yet to be confirmed.

The jury will decide which of the 120 short thought-provoking and inspiring films to be shown in October are the best.

The top prize is sponsored by Gympie businessman Cos Schuh, Schuh Group - the $5000 prize for Best Film; the other two top prizes of $1000 for Best Student's Film and Best Australian Film are sponsored by SaddleSafe and Agents 2 Go respectively.

Another five prizes of $500 each will also be handed out.

Heart of Gold will take place in the Gympie Civic Centre on October 6-9.
