No basis for corruption claims

MEMBER for Burnett Rob Messenger has called for allegations of corruption in Bundaberg Regional Council to be investigated by the Crime and Misconduct Commission.

But the allegations had already been investigated in 2008 and 2010 and the CMC found there was no case to answer.

Mr Messenger alleged a town planner employed by the council had bought property in Bargara and then sold it for a profit.

“The CMC received two separate complaints against a Bundaberg Regional Council employee (in 2008 and 2010) related to alleged misuse of confidential information,” a CMC spokesman said.

“Both matters were referred to the council to deal with subject to monitoring by the CMC.

“In both cases, after investigating the council concluded the complaints were not substantiated. The CMC accepted these outcomes.”

In both cases it was concluded the complaints were not substantiated.

Bundaberg Regional Council spokeswoman Trish Mears said council CEO Peter Byrne had interviewed the complainant, council staff and gone through council files, records and emails but found no evidence of misconduct.

“The recorded interviews and report were then sent to the CMC, who reviewed all the material and accepted the findings of the internal review,” Ms Mears said.
