Mackay, New Zealand flights still on the radar

NEGOTIATIONS continue for direct flights from Mackay to New Zealand and, while there are no firm dates, it could be in time for the peak season next winter.

Mackay Airport and Helloworld Mackay are negotiating the flights with airline companies who have indicated aircraft could be available.

Mackay Airport general manager Rob Porter said the next milestone would be to secure the aircraft.

"We've progressed our discussions with airlines and the next milestone will be securing aircraft to service the flights. There's been strong interest, with the key airline advising they expect to have aircraft available mid-next year," Mr Porter said.

Helloworld Mackay managing director Steven Boxall said this timing aligned perfectly with the winter ski season, which is a major holiday drawcard to New Zealand for Australians.

"A NZ skiing holiday is especially popular with us Queenslanders who don't get much of a winter," Mr Boxall said. "Once the flights are secured there will be some very attractive packages available for people to enjoy a great winter break.

"There will also be opportunities for New Zealanders to fly direct to Mackay on the return flights to enjoy an escape from the cold in our beautiful part of the world and perhaps catch up with friends and relatives living in this region."
