AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL: AFL Darling Downs is kicking goals for women in sport.

The organisation has announced it will expand its women's competition in 2018 with the addition of two extra teams taking the total to seven.

AFL Queensland Regional Manager for the Darling Downs Jeff Neumann said Coolaroo and University Cougars have been granted women's licenses.

"The increase in competition numbers is a testament to the rapid growth of the female football landscape,” he said.

"Recent AFL participation figures show females now account for 39.9 percent of all Queensland and Northern Rivers participants.”

The Roos and Cougars will join Toowoomba Tigers, Dalby Swans, South Burnett Saints, South Toowoomba Bombers and the Lockyer Valley Demons in the new look competition.

The Westpac Women's competition kicks off after Easter on Saturday, April 21 with the official fixture released in early 2018.

Neumann said the growth also provided opportunities for those wanting to be involved off-field.

"Clubs aren't just about the players - they also need coaches, umpires, team managers and match officials,” he said.

"This is the perfect time for people to contact their local club to find out how they can get involved.”
