Gen Y D-railed by type 2 diabetes

GENERATION Y have been renamed Generation D by Diabetes Queensland after research revealed that one in three Gen Ys will contract type 2 diabetes in their lifetime.

The report from Canberra has prompted Diabetes Queensland to renew its call for both major political parties to announce their policies for chronic disease prevention.

Diabetes Queensland CEO Michelle Trute has called on politicians to prove they have an ongoing concern for the health and wellbeing of Queenslanders.

"Every five minutes someone is diagnosed with diabetes," Mrs Trute said.

"It is essential that the government of the day invests in prevention. Until Queensland significantly lifts its game in the area of prevention, we will be a long way from containing the epidemic."

Mrs Trute said that education and awareness were key in curbing the alarming trends that will see over three million Australians living with diabetes by 2032.

"We can provide services to care for people with diabetes, to assess their risk and also raise awareness of the chronic condition," she said.

"Otherwise we will see it get far worse."
