New rules for rugby league's youngsters
RUGBY LEAGUE: Ex-Australian representative Nathan Hindmarsh believes some new rules will make the code more enjoyable for youngsters.
The Parramatta and New South Wales legend was at Maroochydore last week meeting keen kids at a training clinic.
He says the new rules for under-6 and under-7 players will make the game more free-flowing.
"The rule that stands out for me is the fact they're going to put less numbers on the field and make the field smaller.”
"So there's going to be more opportunities for kids who aren't as confident to get their hands on the ball and to tackle.
"There will be more chances for them to build a bit more confidence...and they can enjoy the game.
"The little ones aren't kicking goals any more either so they're having more time with the ball in their hands.”
Fields will be 40m x 20m, there will be six players per team, no scrums, four eight-minute quarters, tap restarts at the 5m line, no conversions, no kicking in play and a 5m defensive line.
Then, there are slight changes to the rules each year as they get older.
The changes come after a five year review incorporating parents, clubs and stakeholders.
"It will just gives the kids more opportunities to run around and enjoy rugby league and it opens up the door for first timers,” Hindmarsh said.
Hindmarsh was also on the Sunshine Coast for the Fox League on Tour 10-day road-show around Queensland.
