New playground brings big smiles after cyclone
SHERI Laidlaw was devastated when she saw the damage Cyclone Marcia had done to the Elfin House childcare centre.
The playground was demolished after massive trees squashed the area in February.
But Sheri (pictured) wasn't going to let the damage bring the centre down.
After seven months and plenty of hard work, staff and kids at Elfin House are all smiles with a new playground up and running.
Sheri, the director of Elfin House, said the outside of the centre wasn't covered under insurance so it has taken awhile to get back on track.
The new area, which includes forts, cost the centre $190,000 which they are still trying to pay off.
Sheri said Elfin House also lost some clients due to the playground being out of use; at the moment the childcare centre is around 65% capacity.
"We want the community to know we are back on track and the playground is bigger and better than before," she said.
It was a trying time for the childcare centre after the cyclone, not only was the playground destroyed but there was a metre of water in the centre.
But staff had the basics back and up running within two weeks.
Anyone wanting to help the centre with donations for the playground should contact Sheri on 4928 3944.
