New England Hwy at Maitland closed after tanker roll over

POLICE are investigating after a fuel tanker roll over in the New South Wales Hunter Valley this morning.

About 2.45am, a tanker carrying approximately 47,000 litres of fuel overturned on the New England Hwy at Maitland.

The New England Hwy at Maitland is closed in both directions until further notice and significant traffic delays are expected.

Heavy vehicles are being asked to avoid the area as the clean up is expected to take a long time.

Northbound motorists are being diverted via Cessnock Rd to Kurri Kurri and Cessnock, then along Wine Country Dve to Branxton to rejoin the New England Hwy.

Southbound motorists are being diverted on the same route in the opposite direction.

The driver of the truck was not hurt during the incident.

Police say it could take all day to clean up as removing thousands of litres of fuel was a delicate job and they have asked people to delay travel to the area and remain patient.

Employees of businesses near the roundabout on High St at Maitland will be unable to access their workplaces while the clean-up operation is underway.   People wishing to access Maitland Hospital are advised to contact the hospital regarding the most appropriate access route.
