New $1M walkway at marina boat ramp complete
Works have been completed ahead of schedule on the new floating walkway at Mackay Marina boat ramp.
Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said works to install the new walkway were originally expected to be completed by the end of the year.
"This is great news for boaties in Mackay with the new walkway now open for use,” Mrs Gilbert said.
"The project will improve access to the waterways and continues the Palaszczuk Government's commitment to the thousands of recreational boaties in the area.”
"Any boatie in this area would know how crowded ramps can get at peak times, so we're committed to maintain and improve safety wherever possible.”
Mrs Gilbert said the new floating walkway is a great addition to this existing facility and will help reduce on-water congestion.
"It will also assist with boat launching and retrieval activities, especially at busy times and improve pedestrian accessibility, particularly for children, people with a disability and the elderly.”
Mrs Gilbert said experienced contractors, The Jetty Specialists were awarded the $1m contract which included widening of the existing ramp to incorporate the new addition and installation of the 2.5 metre wide concrete decked walkway.
"Due to this area having one of the highest tide variations in the state at about six metres, the floating walkway has been built longer than normal to cope with the tide,” she said.
Funding for this project has been provided from the Queensland Government's $30m Marine Infrastructure Fund.
