Negotiations underway for Whitsunday Airport project

WHISTUNDAY Regional Council's Airport and Aerodrome Joint Venture Project has now entered into the final stage of negotiations.

Mayor Jenny Whitney said the council resolved at yesterday's meeting to enter into exclusive negotiations with a preferred proponent, subject to terms.

"Our interim general manager of Commercial, Scott Waters, is currently in detailed negotiations with the council's preferred proponent to jointly develop, grow and manage the Whitsunday Coast Airport and associated aerodromes," Mayor Whitney said.

"It is fantastic that we have a very high calibre, Australian-based proponent from the private sector who recognises the potential of the Whitsunday region and is prepared to work with the council on a partnership basis," she said.

"The partnership we are working towards will protect the council's majority ownership of the airport and ensure that it remains a community asset well into the future, while delivering an excellent growth and development outcome for the Whitsunday region.

"The opportunities before our region were clearly demonstrated when the council unanimously resolved to receive the Empower Economics Report, detailing the positive economic impact a redeveloped airport will have for the region."
