Muskets go out swinging

THE IPSWICH Musketeers' streak of contesting the Greater Brisbane League grand final is over, despite their demolition job over finals-bound Surfers Paradise at Tivoli yesterday.

The Musketeers have finished runners-up to Windsor Royals the past two GBL seasons, but will not have the opportunity to go one-better this year.

The hosts needed to win both matches against Surfers, and hope Pine Rivers lost their two outings if they were any chance of sneaking into the top four.

Following a 12-2 first match win, and leading 6-1 in the second match, a deluge over Ipswich forced a cancellation to the second game and with it the Musketeers' finals hopes.

Not that it would have mattered, with Pine Rivers winning both of their final round matches to confirm their place in the top four.

Musketeers short stop Wade Dutton said it was a disappointing way to end the season, knowing the Ipswich side had just put a strong Surfers Paradise team to the sword.

"That was our best team we've had on the park since November, and you could tell,” the Brisbane Bandit said, referencing the return to the team of he and fellow Bandit Rhys Niit.

"We played the team that's coming third on the season and gave them a touch up.

"(Missing the finals) sucks, because I reckon we would have given it a good run this year.”

Not that the players needed extra motivation with a GBL finals berth on the line, but Dutton said having former players, sponsors and supporters there lit a fire under the team.

"It was extra exciting because we knew it was Old Boys' Day, they're always great days,” he said.

"The A-Grade boys put on a big barbecue to thank them for coming.

"You know you've gotta show up to play, because if not (the Old Boys) will let you know about it.”

Dutton was already looking ahead to next season.

"We're getting close,” he said. "We have the core group already, and with a couple of key imports I think we'll go real close (to winning the GBL) next season.”
