UPDATED: SEVERAL people have been taken to hospital after a crash on Hobart's Eastern Shore which closed a key overpass for several hours.

Three vehicles - a blue Ford Ranger utility, a truck, and silver Mitsubishi four-wheel drive towing a trailer - were involved in the crash on South Arm Highway, with two people trapped.

Emergency crews freed the pair but the Mornington overpass was closed for several hours while the accident site was cleared.

Witnesses said one of those trapped - the male driver of the Ford Ranger - was chatting with rescuers during the operation.

The Mornington overpass reopened shortly after 3pm today.

"Motorists should be aware that delays may still be experienced while traffic congestion clears," police said in a brief statement.
