MP Neumann backs Gillard Govt

MEDIA reports yesterday played up alleged tensions between Julia Gillard and her Labor colleagues, but Ipswich MP Shayne Neumann said she had his full support.

The Member for Blair said given the tremendous support the PM has shown the Ipswich region, especially after the floods, he believed Ms Gillard was the best person to lead the party.

His comments came after a large number of media outlets across the nation reported that her leadership had come under internal scrutiny following the High Court's decision to scuttle the Malaysian asylum seeker deal.

Despite the speculation, Labor MPs came out in force to back the PM yesterday and Ms Gillard vowed to fight on in the top job until the 2013 election.

Mr Neumann said she deserved to lead the party.

“The Prime Minister has my full support. She has been a tremendous help to me during the flood and flood recovery,” Mr Neumann said.

“The PM was a great help to Ipswich during the floods, with lots of money put into Ipswich.”

He said funding to help repair flood damaged roads in the Ipswich and Lockyer Valley was an example of the PM's concern for the Ipswich region.

Yesterday former Queensland premier Peter Beattie told Labor colleagues to hold their nerve and resist any temptation to roll Ms Gillard.

As he ruled out a tilt at federal politics, Mr Beattie said now was not the time to change leaders.

“Julia Gillard is the best person to lead this country,” he told the Queensland Media Club.

“To change leaders at this time would destroy the Labor Party.”

Ms Gillard did her best to quell speculation about her leadership when questioned yesterday.

“I'm not going anywhere. I've got too much to do,” she said.
