Moon halo could be a sign of wild weather to come
CAMERAS were out last night to capture the halo around the moon.
Justamumento Photography's Astrid Allison sent this photo in to The Observer's Facebook page this morning.
She snapped it on her Nikon after her friend Melony Cole told her about the visual feast.
Several online resources, including Universe Today and science sites say the ring around the moon are caused when moonlight passes through thin clouds of ice crystals high in the atmosphere.
Sometimes this can indicate that bad weather is on the way.
This could be true for Gladstone, with wet, windy and cold weather expected this weekend.
One site explains that the ring around the moon is caused by cirrus clouds - which are wispy and ribbon-like - that can indicate there could be some low-pressure systems within two days.
