THE stage is set for a monstrous two days of musical magic as the students at Chinchilla State High School put the finishing touches on this year's production, "The Addams Family”.

The young thespians have been working hard on the musical adaptation of the much-loved 1960s TV show turned movie franchise, which director and CSHS Year 12 coordinator and drama teacher Brian Shoesmith said would run for three shows, from May 19.

Mr Shoesmith said he had chosen "The Addams Family” for the 2017 musical after seeing it in Sydney on his honeymoon and "instantly falling in love with it”.

"It's one of those musicals where everyone knows the characters but no one knows the musical so it's an opportunity to bring something new to the community,” he said.

"The (students) seem to enjoy it; I think the biggest thing is that there's this new rekindled love of the Addams family again from the student body they didn't have before. It's nice to bring that back,” he said.

Interestingly, the students are yet to sit down and collectively watch the movies or the TV show, something Mr Shoesmith said was done deliberately.

"I didn't want to show them the movies because the movies are a lot darker than the musical projects and I think if you start showing them the movie then they've got a picture they think they have to be, rather than developing their own character through what's written on a page,” he said.

The story of the musical revolves around Wednesday, who is now grown up but has fallen in love with a "completely normal guy”, Mr Shoesmith said.

The Addams Family get invited to dinner to meet the parents of this young man, and conflict ensues.

"So it's quite an interesting divide between the relationships of parents and teenagers and how they can react or not react to certain situations,” Mr Shoesmith said, adding that he thought parents would be "pleasantly surprised” by certain aspects of the production.

Tickets are on sale now from the CSHS office. Adults are $15 and students are $10.

There will be three shows - the first of which takes place at 7.30pm on Friday, May 19.

A matinee performance will take place at 1.30pm on Saturday, May 20, and a final production at 7.30pm on May 20.
