Mixed success for Mackay representative bowls teams
MACKAY'S representative bowlers met with mixed success at the State District Sides Championships at Tweed Heads.
The men's side proved themselves the best district north of the Sunshine Coast when they finished runners-up in division two, a one-place improvement on last year's seventh.
In sectional play, Mackay won seven of their nine games, losing only to the powerful Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast sides, before going down by just five shots to the Downs, who won division two. It was a great effort by all the players involved and a credit to the district selectors.
Gold Coast entered two sides and they were placed first and second in the final wash-up.
"It's the team everyone wants to beat but even if you win a battle against the powerful Gold Coast Tweed district, you rarely win the war," a Bowls Queensland media release reads.
Ladies results
The ladies side at the district championships was not as successful as the men, slipping from their seventh place last year to finish eleventh.
They started well, with two wins and a draw on the first day, but tough competition held them to just three wins in the next six games.
The ladies had a chance to finish in ninth place but suffered a five-shot loss to Far North Queensland in their final game.
Pennants
Round four of the interclub pennant competition will be played on Saturday, with Seaforth hosting Northern Beaches, Mackay travelling to Proserpine and Souths Suburban at home to Sarina in the top division. North Mackay will be out to keep their hopes for the division two title on track against City while Northern Beaches hosts Suburban and Marian plays Airlie Beach.
