Mitchell's 140-run smashathon ignites 2015-16 cricket summer
FOR a batsman who'd just kicked off the Coffs Harbour District Cricket season with a one man display of fireworks, Trent Mitchell was fairly laid back about the situation.
Opening for Sawtell against Dorrigo at Richardson Park, the first man to pick up a bat this summer had his century on the board in the first session.
Eventually removed on 140, Mitchell had a laconic tale to tell about how that came about.
"I just said to (Dorrigo wicketkeeper) Nathan Secomb how good their young bowler Simon Beverley had been earlier in the day and suggested he give him another go," Mitchell said.
"So next thing Nathan's thrown the kid the ball and he's put one down that I turned away into the hands of Eric Moore and that was that.
"By that stage I was pretty exhausted and the rest of the boys were getting runs so it didn't matter.
"It was great to start the year with a bang but I have to be honest and say every delivery seemed to be on the bat and all I had to do was belt them away."
With every batsman seeing the ball as big as a soup plate, the runs flowed and the declaration came at 7-337 in the 57th over.
Tyh Murphy creamed the Dorrigo bowlers to register 80 runs while new faces Richie Gallichan (30) and Tim Welsford (34) showed plenty of potential on debut.
In reply, Dorrigo was 2-48 by stumps from 14 overs and unless they can build a fresh start on day two this Saturday, an innings defeat is on the cards.
Meanwhile, Nambucca Valley debuted at Thistle Park against Plantation Diggers and restricted the premiers to 155 from 64 overs.
Ty Adams and Glen Kesby were equal top scorers for Diggers with 29 each while Tim Moon was Nambucca's best bowler with 2-6 including two maidens from his five over spell.
Andrew Budd went for seven and Nambucca will resume at 1-28 with Jack Ireland and Brodie Bartlett in the middle.
Park Beach Bowling Club Colts has the first round bye.
