Mitch Bamping is making strides in his therapy

BYRON surfer Mitch Bamping was one of the funding recipients from last year's BK Classic.

The Byron Bay Board Riders Ben King Classic is named in honour of former president Ben King who died during a surf competition in 2006.

The 40th anniversary Classic is on again over this June's Long Weekend and registrations are now open: Go to: byronbayboardriders.com

In September 2013 Mitch was the victim of a hit-and-run accident in Bali that has left him a quadriplegic.

Following emergency surgery in Bali, he was airlifted back to Australia where he spent 18 months in the Princess Margaret Hospital in Brisbane.

Mitch's workplace insurance paid for the medical evacuation and some income protection, which has since run out.

In March he moved to his mother's house in Kingscliff, where Donna Bamping now looks after her son full-time, with carers helping five hours a day.

"He has just started therapy at Making Strides at Burleigh Heads and he is making marvellous progress," said Ms Bamping.

"We believe anything is possible and miracles can happen."

Mitch's wife Catherine and their two children still live with Bali.

"Catherine has been here to see Mitch a couple of times but she has health issues and family responsibilities at home that mean she can't move to Australia," said Ms Bamping.

"He is a strong man but he has his dark moments - he just wants to be with his wife and family."
