Miners, diners & old-timers: Charity Trek a ride to remember
The Central Queensland Harness Club's annual Charity Trek came to a restful finish at Lake Victoria last Saturday after an eventful week which left the participants with stories they could tell around the campfire "for many years".
"On day one we saw three people have falls, one vehicle have a major breakdown and one of our older gentlemen went to hospital," said trek organiser Lynda Erwin.
The ride started with six horse drawn vehicles and six ridden horses as they left Lawgi Heritage Park on Easter Sunday.
Participants rode up through Thangool and then into Biloela on March 30, where they paid a visit to Wahroonga Retirement Village so the residents could ride in the horse-drawn buggies.
They were joined there by My Kitchen Rules contestants Alex and Gareth, the 'miner diners', who were on hand to host the barbecue and charity auction at the Biloela Showgrounds later that day.
"(The boys) were just in time to help one of the residents out of the buggy after her ride," Mrs Erwin said.
"Once she was on the ground, she was asked if she watched My Kitchen Rules, and she went on to say how she loved the show and that it was terrible that the two miner boys were now out.
"She was asked if she knew who had just helped her out of the buggy and she looked, squealed with excitement and gave both boys a big hug. They made her day."
The barbecue and charity auction was attended by over 100 people.
After Biloela, the riders made their way up through Jambin and Goovigen over the next few days, before coming to a stop at Lake Victoria on April 2.
"The favourite (locations) in Banana Shire within the team were Callide Dam and Lake Victoria," said Mrs Erwin.
"Horses were taken swimming, and the sunrises and sunsets were absolutely beautiful over the water."
Mrs Erwin said she wanted to thank local businesses for sponsoring the ride and donating prizes for the raffle.
