Million-dollar event returns to Sunshine Coast
AN EVENT worth more than one million dollars to the Coast economy is back on the calendar.
The MX Nationals Australian Motocross Championships will return to Coolum in August, bringing 5000-7000 spectators back to the Quanda Rd complex.
Series promoter Kevin Williams of Williams Event Management spoke to the Daily this morning, moments after signing off on the contract to bring the final round of the championships back to Coolum.
He said the event delivered an economic injection of more than $1 million each year, as teams, officials and spectators descended on the Coast, many for an entire week, ahead of the series finale.
The event had been removed from the calendar recently, after support for the event was withdrawn.
But an emergency Suncoast Junior Motorcycle Club meeting was held and the vote - 60-2 in favour of hosting the series - ensured negotiations could be undertaken.
Coolum will now host the 10th and final round of the Motul MX Nationals on August 19-20 at the Coolum Pines Motocross Track.
Mr Williams said the final round was seen as a holiday week for the series, with many heading from the ninth round straight to Coolum.
"Who doesn't want to spend a week in Coolum in August?" he said.
He said the August 19-20 dates also ensured the event wouldn't clash with this year's Gympie Muster.
Mr Williams said the series enjoyed a strong relationship with the Sunshine Coast Council and the region's tourism body, with the Sunshine Coast the official holiday destination of the MX Nationals.
He said between 500-600 officials, about 250 riders and roughly the same amount of mechanics would be joined by between 5000-7000 spectators in August.
