Miles weightlifter on top of the state

MILES weightlifter Chloe Kerwick has conquered the state and now has her sights set on beating the country's best.

Kerwick won gold last week at the Queensland Weightlifting Championships in Brisbane.

The Miles Saints product lifted a total of 170kg, to win the 890kg open women's event.

Kerwick took a 5kg lead after lifting a personal best of 75kg in the snatch.

Her lift of 95kg in the clean and jerk was enough to take gold.

Kerwick said becoming state champion was a special feeling.

"It is one of those things where you work your bum off and you are happy with any placing, but when you get the gold it is pretty great,” she said.

"I go in there and lift the weight, but I have coaches and family who support me and it is great when you can celebrate it with them.”

Kerwick said she was thrilled with the personal best in the snatch, but has room for improvement in the clean and jerk.

Her clean and jerk was compromised during the competition, after an unfortunate incident backstage.

"I didn't lift as much as I wanted in the clean and jerk after I hit my jaw with the bar in warm-up,” she said.

"I was very sore in the neck.

"I was able to achieve a personal best in the snatch which I was really happy with.”

Kerwick is now focused on the national titles, which will be held in Brisbane in eight weeks.

Kerwick was not the only member of the Saints club to secure a medal at the state titles.

16-year-old Kylie Salisbury took the silver medal in the 75kg junior competition.
