Messages of hope, love and inspiration
THE Bright Stars memorial sits in Buderim Lions Park, honouring babies, children, and young people of the Sunshine Coast who have passed away.
On Sunday, July 30, a year since its unveiling, Team Adem will host its second Chalk the Walk at the site.
Team Adem supports organisations caring for seriously ill children and their families, and spokesman Brenty Crosby said Chalk the Walk was an opportunity for people of all ages to express their grief.
"It's for people going through a tough time, to come and leave a comment, or send their loved one a message,” he said.
"We encourage them to come up and do something, whether it be a message, a drawing, or anything really, using the power of chalk.”
His son Adem started the Team Adem charity as a teenager in 2013, during his two-year battle with leukaemia.
Mr Crosby said Chalk the Walk was about letting people express themselves.
"There's no limitations - we just give them chalk and they're able to take that away and draw where and what they like,” he said.
"Art therapy is really popular, especially for children going through a tough time.
"They might not be able to put into words how they're feeling, but they're quite good at drawing pictures.”
Adem's mum Lu also said the event was about starting conversations.
"We lost our child,” Mrs Crosby said.
"We're trying to break the taboo of the loss of a family member, trying to break down the fear of children and adults when it comes to the passing of someone.
"It's something positive that's come from our loss.”
Mrs Crosby said they intended Chalk the Walk to be a one-off last year, but it seemed to mean so much to the community, they decided to hold it again.
"It's about messages of love, hope and inspiration,” she said.
"There was a magical feeling of how much love is around the park, we thought we'd make it an annual event.”
Chalk the Walk is a free event, held from 9am-12pm Sunday, July 30 at Buderim Lion's Park, Burnett St.
