Mercurial Mercer’s in league of her own

NOOSA'S Jordan Mercer has overcome two race setbacks to capture her second gold at the world paddleboard championship in Peru.

In big surf at Lima early yesterday morning, the rising ironwoman lost her board twice but still managed to defend her 7km technical race title.

"Jordan had a pretty adventurous race," her father and coach, ironman great Darren Mercer, said.

"She lost her board twice in the break and both times had to swim to retrieve it … both times she fell behind and had to catch up."

Mercer defended her long-distance title, for the second time, earlier in week.

Her Noosa Heads teammate, Lincoln Dews, second behind Sydney's Brad Gaul in the long-distance race, won the men's technical race yesterday. This time, Gaul was runner-up.

Mercer will look to make it three from three - just like last year - when she contests the relay early this morning.

Her technical time was 31min55sec.

The runner-up, South African Anna Notten, who also finished second to Mercer in the long-distance race, finished in 32min09sec.

Mercer's performances at the International Surfing Association World Standup Paddle and Paddleboard Championship have been an exercise in overcoming exhaustion.

She flew to Peru the morning after coming second at the final round of the Telstra Ironwoman Series at Noosa last Sunday.
