BRAZILIAN Sarah Menezes has defeated defending champion Alina Dumitru to win judo gold in the women's extra lightweight 48 kilogram at the London Olympics.

Menezes claimed victory after landing two crucial scoring throws late in the bout, ending the hopes of Dumitru retiring on a high note.

Earlier, Dumitru progressed to the final after defeating two-time world silver medalist and top seed Tomoko Fukumi.

Fukumi ended her campaign in disastrous fashion, tasting defeat again in the bronze medal bout to Eva Csernoviczki of Hungary.
