Meetings offer support for at-home carers
EACH month carers in the South Burnett come together to share experiences and provide support.
This is set to continue in 2019 with the first Care for Carers meeting to be held on Wednesday, January 16 from 10.30am-12.30pm at Kingaroy RSL.
Janine Mewburn is the Care for Carers facilitator at STEPS Social and Community, which hosts the meetings.
She said meetings were designed for unpaid carers who looked after a family member or friend with a disability, mental health or age related illness of all ages in their home.
"The focus is to keep carers strong in their role, that is what it is all about,” Ms Mewburn said.
"It is about connecting with people in similar situations because whether the person they care for is young with a disability or older with dementia, a lot of the issues carers face are similar.”
Each month the meetings can vary from a simple cup of tea to presentations from guest speakers covering a variety of topics from the NDIS to an occupational therapist on working with children with autism and resilient building workshops.
Ms Mewburn said new carers were always welcome to join the regular group of up to 15 carers.
