McGilverys grateful for Gayndah's support

IN LATE May Gayndah lost its last surviving Second World War veteran Keith McGilvery and the family said they couldn't more appreciative of the support they've received from the tight-knit community in the months that followed.

Mr McGilvery's wife of almost 69 years, Phyllis, said she is out-and-about and doing well, and the time has come to thank Gayndah for their support during the hard times.

"The whole family would like to thank all who attended his funeral, sent flowers, cards, phone calls, emails and messages of sympathy,” Mrs McGilvery said.

"Keith was dearly loved by myself and his children Bruce, Rob, Karen and their spouses, his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.”

Mrs McGilvery was the primary carer for her husband, who passed away at the age of 96.

She said the community came together to help care for Mr Mcgilvery and also at the time of his passing.

Mrs McGilvery said she wanted to give a special thank you to Gayndah Hospital, Dr Aziz, the local Ambulance officers, Gunther Village and Fiona Ellis.

"And an extra special thank you to Blue Care for their care and attention to Keith over the last three years.

"Lastly to Fred and Shirley for the compassion and friendship they have shown to our family.”

While living in Monto in the early 1940s, Mr McGilvery enlisted in the Australian Air Force to play his part in the war effort.

He trained in Melbourne before being mobilised against the Japanese advance in South East Asia.

A celebration of Mr McGilvery's life was held at the Gayndah RSL Hall on May 25 and, in lieu of flowers, the family asked for donations to Gayndah Blue Care.
