Matilda's wink is as good as a nod

MATILDA, the 13 metre high kangaroo who helped introduce Brisbane to the world at the 1982 Commonwealth Games, now stands proudly near the Bruce Hwy south of Gympie and is winking once more.

Matilda was officially welcomed back yesterday when she went on full display at her new home - a purpose-built area at the Kybong Travel Centre.

Before being unveiled Matilda underwent significant refurbishment to be restored to her former glory to be ready for her debut. This included the return of her famous wink and in addition her ears now turn as well.

Matilda Fuel Supplies general manager, Garth Anderson, said the long journey had been well worth the wait.

"Her refurbishment has included $40,000 of automation technology, repainting, fibreglass repairs and replacement of steelworks," he said.

"Not to mention making possible again what she is renowned for - winking."

"We have always kept a close eye on our namesake's progress and were delighted when the opportunity came up to make her an official member of the Matilda family and call our Travel Centre at Kybong home," he said.

Matilda Fuel Supplies, which ironically inherited its name from Matilda the Kangaroo, made the purchase of Matilda from Warner Village Theme Parks in August 2009, her 27th birthday.

Matilda was embraced by families and fun-seekers, when she stood tall at the entrance to Wet'n'Wild Water World at Oxenford on the Gold Coast before being retired on her 24th birthday.
