WATCH: Masterchefs turn our produce into delicious dishes
THE footpath outside Warwick Post Office turned into a makeshift Masterchef kitchen today as two former contestants fired up the frying pan to showcase our region's produce.
Mimi Baines and Sam Goodwin shared three different recipes with the crowd for the Celebration of Local Flavours as part of Jumpers and Jazz in July.
The pair gave Southern Downs producers the big tick of approval, as well as the festival for acting as a platform to educate people about the produce.
Sam said the potatoes sourced from Wickham Farms were perfect for the potato rosti on the menu today as they were starchy while Canning Downs beef was used in a beef stir fry.
Jazz apples from Montague in Stanthorpe were used to prepare an apple crumble waffle.
"It's been incredible, the apples are a standout," he said.
Mimi said she was also impressed by the apples, preferring to use the Montague Farms produce when she's cooking in Melbourne.
Sam praised events like Celebration of Local Flavours for helping connect people with producers.
"It's being able to put a story behind it and meet the producers," he said.
"Even the kids are getting out and getting involved, it helps to educate them and when you know how to cook you eat better," he said.
Growing up in Ocean Grove in Victoria, Sam said it was good to be part of an event with a strong community vibe.
"Everyone is wandering around and listening to music and having snacks," he said.
"You don't have that same thing in Melbourne, it's a lot of hustle and bustle."
Seats filled up quickly outside the post office for the demonstration, where the pair also gave a few cooking tips.
Sam urged the crowd to use salt to bring out flavours, but also said the secret to fluffy waffles was to gently fold in whipped egg whites in small amounts.
The pair also gave their tips for who might win Masterchef this year, with Sashi the favourite for Mimi and Sam tipping Khahn to come out on top.
