MasterChef cook about to open Sunny Coast restaurant

FORMER MasterChef contestant Matt Sinclair is bringing a little bit of Asia to the Sunshine Coast as he prepares to throw open the doors to his new restaurant.

Coast residents will have a chance to dine at the 2016 runner-up's restaurant when Sum Yung Guys opens on June 9.

Sinclair and three of his mates, Michael 'Moe' Rickard (chef), Dylan Campbell (front of house) and Jeremiah Jones (chef), have been flat-strap preparing the Duke St, Sunshine Beach premises for the past few months.

The business partners want the restaurant to have a family-friendly focus with sharing at its heart.

"It's a modern Asian share-style menu with small, medium and larger plates on offer," Sinclair said.

"The whole idea of sharing is to get friends and family to come along as a group.

"We've tried to capture the four personalities of the boys to make it a fun, warm and energetic space."

Menu items include cured Spanish mackerel with hot and sour Thai flavours, the boys' own style of satay chicken served with their own peanut sauce made from scratch - so no peanut butter in there - and an aromtaic red duck curry.

There's enough room to seat 80 people in the restaurant comfortably.

For those chasing a drink instead, a bar has been set up in a courtyard area complete with bamboo screens and running water intended to give people a little taste of the east.

"The cocktail menu's been designed to complement the food using classic Asian aromats and herbs," Sinclair said.

His personal favourite was a dragon fruit infused gin.

Although the former MasterChef contestant has not had a whole lot of time to watch the current series, he does make an appearance on the show this month when he mentors the cooks in a team challenge.

Sinclair said although preparing the restaurant for opening had been stressful at times, he was proud of the way the foursome had stuck together.

"No matter how serious or stressful it's got there's been a lot of laughs, which is good to have that comedic relief," he said.

"The way we've done it together as a team, successfully, we've supported each other to this point where we're about to open a restaurant."

The cook said he was feeling excited and anxious as the opening date loomed closer.

"There's not too many times in life you can say that you're about to do something of this magnitude," he said.
