Mary gets Hollywood makeover with film to be out next year

MARYBOROUGH'S rich history will be portrayed on the big screen at the end of next year, with Disney announcing a US release date for its film Saving Mr Banks: December 20, 2013.

The Hollywood film will be based on the trials and tribulations of Maryborough author P. L Travers' relationship with legendary film-maker Walt Disney in the lead up to the release of the movie Mary Poppins.

Scenes reminiscent of Maryborough's historical past will be portrayed in the film, which will include a series of flashbacks to 1906 to portray Travers' time as a child in the Heritage City and how she used her vivid imagination to escape the misery she encountered at home.

The film will focus on the colourful characters Travers created in stories told to her siblings. Production on the feature length film began last month in America and is expected to be complete by late November.

Maryborough will not be used as a filming location for the film according to the production company, with the production expected to take place in Los Angeles.
