Married for just 1500 years
LOVE was definitely in the air at Bremer Waters on Saturday, with 21 couples clocking up more than 1500 years of marriage together.
Joint organiser Bill van Roosmalen, who will celebrate his 50th anniversary on May 20 to wife Margaret, said the idea to host an anniversary party was raised more than 18 months ago.
“We thought, if we make it to our 50th, we should have a party,” Mr van Roosmalen said.
“We decided to have a joint party with friends, then it became a dozen couples so we went through the village.”
Fellow organiser Jacquelene Green, who celebrated her golden anniversary on April 8 with John, said it was pretty special to have so many happy couples reaching the milestone.
“We are all very fortunate,” she said.
“Kindness, respect and a good sense of humour, that's what it takes for an enduring marriage.”
Mrs Green said the celebration was even more important, given the events of January when the over 50s housing estate on Moores Pocket Road at Tivoli was inundated when the Bremer River ran wild.
“It has become a lot more special,” she said.
“We have all lost something, whether it was our homes or our lifestyle.
“The ones who were inundated and are living outside are missing the friendships and camaraderie of the village.”
Margaret and Des Connell are among those waiting for their home to be repaired after flood waters came up close to a metre inside their home.
They are living nearby in a townhouse.
“The last few months haven't been especially easy, but they haven't been easy on so many people,” Mrs Connell said.
“It is sad when you read in the paper about the people who are struggling.
“We are looking at the good side, we are better off than other people.”
The couple were married on January 28, 1952, and moved to Bremer Waters in 2007.
The great-grandparents met at school in Wellington, New South Wales.
Mrs Connell said she thought the joint celebration was a great idea.
“I think it is lovely,” she said.
“There are so many people here who have been together for so long.”
