Marcia debris still threat to region in 2016 bushfire season
DEBRIS from Cyclone Marcia over a year ago is still a threat to Central Queensland.
The Rural Fire Service a urging landowners to begin preparation for next bushfire season and be aware of the remaining cyclone debris.
Landowners are being urged to begin preparing for the 2016 bushfire season as part of 'Operation Cool Burn'.
Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) is asking landowners to be proactive in disposing of debris, and contact their local fire warden before burning fuel loads.
RFSQ Central Region Manager Brian Smith said Tropical Cyclone Marcia had resulted in significant debris throughout the region which needed to be managed well before bushfire season.
"With the clean-up from Tropical Cyclone Marcia still ongoing, we're urging landowners to be proactive," he said.
"Residents have been terrific in previous years, disposing of debris before it becomes an issue and we need that to continue throughout this season.
"Burn where necessary, but take into consideration the weather conditions, size of the fire, proximity to other potential fuel and make sure it is closely monitored."
Mr Smith said it was essential for landowners to obtain a permit if their fire would be bigger than two metres in any direction.
"The Permit to Light a Fire system ensures burns are conducted at an appropriate time of the year, are suitably managed and emergency services are notified," he said.
"Permits come with clear guidelines on when you can light the fire and what precautions need to be taken, including the provision of informing neighbours of planned burns.
"This reduces the likelihood of unnecessary calls to emergency services.
"What's more, we encourage landowners who wish to burn a large number of small piles of debris less than 2m x 2m to still contact the local fire warden before lighting, so this information can be passed to the Triple Zero (000) call centre to avoid unnecessary attendance by local brigades."
