Man stung by 'junkie' insult steals housemate's car

AN ARGUMENT with a house mate led to a series of events that has put a Blue Mountain Heights man behind bars.

Nathan Trevor Head had become embroiled in an argument with his female housemate at a Murphys Creek Rd residence on March 1, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

The pair had then exchanged barbs via Facebook posts before the woman heard Head leave the house and go outside.

A short time later about 12.30pm, she heard her car's engine start, prompting her to run outside, police prosecutor Natalie Bugden told the court.

She later told police of seeing Head smile at her as he drove off on Murphys Creek Rd in her car.

The pair again exchanged words via Facebook with the complainant telling Head to return her vehicle, Senior Constable Bugden said.

Eventually, the 25-year-old sent the woman complainant a Facebook message telling her that he'd leave the vehicle in Helidon for her to pick up, the court heard.

The next day when he hadn't returned, an arrest warrant was issued for Head who, when he heard about the warrant, voluntarily attended the police station.

Released on bail with conditions including reporting to police each week day, the 25-year-old had then failed to attend court as required on May 25.

He had also failed to report to police on any day between May 17 and his eventual arrest on Wednesday this week when police found him at a Blue Mountain Heights address.

He told police he had not fronted court as required because he knew he was in trouble for breaching his bail conditions and didn't want to be arrested, Snr Const. Bugden said.

Head pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a motor vehicle, failing to appear in court and 16 counts of breaching bail.

Duty solicitor Claire Graham told the court her client had issues with "ice" and marijuana and that the argument with his house mate had arisen from her calling him a "junkie", she said.

Magistrate Damian Carroll noted Head had similar offending in his criminal history and that a certain malice was involved in his taking the complainant's vehicle.

Mr Carroll sentenced him to eight months in jail but ordered he be released on parole as of August 22.
