Man stays one step ahead of online scammers
A KINGAROY man was sent a suspicious email this week advising him he had a tax refund to collect.
Tim Robe received the message, which had been made to look like it was from MyGov, on Wednesday. It claimed Mr Robe was eligible for a tax refund of $109.83.
But there was one aspect of the email that made Mr Robe realise it was an online scam.
"They were asking for my credit card details, that was the dead giveaway," he said.
"Other than that it really did look genuine."
At that point, he printed the email and took it to the authorities.
"I obviously didn't reply, I just took it straight to the police," Mr Robe said.
Unfortunately, as there was only an email address to go off, there was not a lot the police could do.
Mr Robe was on the ball enough to realise the email was a scam but feared other people might not be so observant.
"A lot of people might not be aware of these types of illegal activity," he said.
"I am hoping to make people aware not to give your private and confidential information over the internet."
Mr Robe has become a lot more vigilant after being the victim of credit card fraud in the past.
"We lost over $6000, thankfully we were able to get it back from our bank," he said.
