Man charged with robbing scooter driver at knifepoint

A MAN has been charged with a series of terrifying robberies on the Coast.

The 21-year-old Ipswich man is accused of a spate of crimes from Townsville to Tewantin in February and March.

At 11.30am on February 13, he allegedly demanded cash from a 32-year-old female shop attendant at a Tewantin service station on Poinciana Ave, before fleeing the business with the money.

He allegedly had a failed attempt of robbing a service station in Cranbrook but fled when the employee refused to hand over money and a customer entered.

Police intercepted a vehicle he was a passenger in at Tewantin on March 1, but he allegedly fled on foot.

Then on March 27, at about 2.20pm, the man allegedly approached an unattended scooter parked outside a restaurant on St Andrews Drive, Tewantin.

As the man was attempting to start the scooter, the owner confronted him. He allegedly pulled out a knife, threatening the owner while demanding the scooter to be started. The owner complied, showing the man how to start the scooter and he fled on the scooter.

The Ipswich man has been charged with three counts of stealing, two counts each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He was also charged with one count each of wilful damage, trespass, possession of a knife in a public place, fail to stop motor vehicle, evade fare, enter with intent, assault, attempted robber, assault occasioning bodily harm, obstruct police, and armed robbery.

The man surrendered himself to police in Ipswich yesterday and is due to appear in the Ipswich Magistrate's court today (March 30).
