A 74-YEAR-OLD Kingaroy man will face the magistrate on a charge of driving without due care and attention after he allegedly struck a 20-year-old woman on the Haly St pedestrian crossing.

The incident sparked calls, including from The South Burnett Times, for the Department of Main Roads and Transport to improve visibility at the intersection.

However, Kingaroy Senior Sergeant David Tierney said the location and foliage around the Haly St crossing was not a big a concern for police. Instead he put the responsibility back on the drivers and pedestrians.

"I don't have any issue with the sitting of that particular crossing,” he said.

In order to prevent future crashes, Snr Sgt Tierney said drivers and pedestrians both needed to stay alert.

"Being distracted isn't ideal,” he said.

"If you are going to be on the phone or reading or looking through a bag stop walking whether on the footpath or approaching a crossing and finish what you are doing.

"Again I'm not wanting to blame the victims but people have to be aware of their environment, the hazards around them and take some responsibility.”

South Burnett Regional Council Mayor Keith Campbell said he would write to the head of Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads and request a safety review of the site.

Nanango MP Deb Freckington floated the idea of moving the crossing.

"There are people who say there shouldn't be a crossing there at all, that we should make pedestrians walk up to the lights (at Kingaroy St) and cross there. It would be interesting to see what the community feedback would be to that suggestion,” Mrs Frecklington said.

The pedestrian is a South Burnett Times employee.

She suffered head injuries and bruising to her face, arm, legs and torso and was released from hospital on April 15.
