Mail order liquid ecstasy could lead to life of misery

A BYRON Bay man is facing life in prison after he allegedly was sent 25 litres of liquid ecstasy by mail.

The 29-year-old came to the attention of authorities after a package mailed from China to his South Golden Beach address was intercepted by customs officers earlier this month.

A liquid substance, which was tested and discovered to be Gammabutyrolactone or GBL, was found inside a blue container in the package.

The package was delivered on Friday by Federal Police to the man's address where he was arrested.

He is due to appear at Lismore Local Court today to answer the charge of attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border controlled substance.

The maximum penalty for this offence is a $1.275 million fine or life in prison.
