Maidenwell couple set for world stage

BARREL RACING: In the world of barrel racing competing in America is the pinnacle of the sport.

It is where the best of the best go to test themselves.

Maidenwell couple Karli and Michael Sanford will be bound for the states in 2019.

They will pull on green and gold for Australia at the National Barrel Horse Association world championships.

"The best are going there, it is a big stage and it is really exciting but nerveracking at the same time,” Karli said.

"All those hours amount to something and if you are committed and passionate you can achieve what you want.

"The dream for us has already happened and we will be happy if we finish with a smile.”

They each earned a spot on the Australian team competing in the National Barrel Horse Association division nine events across Queensland this year.

Karli qualified for the Australian team in her first season barrel racing five years ago but due to injury had to put her dream on hold.

Michael took up the sport three years ago and is proud to be helping break down the stigma of men competing in the sport.

Barrel racing is a family affair for the Sanfords with their children Hayden and Summer competing in the pee wee ranks.

They believe this has been key to their success.

"Because we did it together and had each other's backs if Karli had a bad day I could remind her there is next week and visa versa,” Michael said.

"A lot of people compete by themselves they don't have that support and back up.”

"One of the hardest thing is when you get stuck in your head but the kids there your mind off it,” Karli said.

For Karli and Michael their lives revolve around their horses and they wouldn't have it any other way.

They both know all too well that the barrels hurt when you hit them.

They said they had not gotten to where they are without hard work and dedication.

"People look at racing and say 'there are only three barrels' and don't realise the effort or time you have to put into it,” Michael said.

"There is a fine finesse between running a fast time and being disqualified.”
