Mackay's proposed $445 parking fee for trucks

TRUCKIES described the Mackay Regional Council's plan to impose a $445 parking fee on some heavy vehicle owners in the region as "greedy" and have "no regard for those trying to earn a living".

Daniel Price said it was "hard on an already expensive industry that will only drive freight costs higher to us".

James Ralph said it was a money grab.

"Pay for a permit to park at your house or pay a fine for parking at your house. Great choice they're giving you," he said.

The law, if adopted by council, will force owners of a light rigid vehicle with a mass of more than eight tonnes to pay the permit fee, unless they can meet specific criteria.

The criteria includes parking forward in and forward out of a residence and screening the vehicle from view of the neighbours.

The plan will be open for public consultation.

Lesa Smith stood up for truckies.

"No, it costs them enough to run their trucks. Leave them alone."

Shane Tynan said it was time for an Aussie-wide, week-long strike.

"Not just for this but fuel prices and heaps of other crap we have to put up with!"
