Mackay teen's major tour and half-time Origin show

MACKAY'S Tia Gostelow is having a great few months... about to hit the road with Powderfinger's Bernard Fanning, the 17-year-old songbird has been announced as the half-time entertainment for Wednesday night's State of Origin.

"Gotta be freaking happy when your daughter is the half-time entertainment at game 1, what a way to spend your first State of Origin!” Tia's dad Bevan Gostelow posted on Facebook.

It's believed the performance may not be televised, but Tia's support is hoping to set up a Facebook live to catch her big performance.

Last year Tia won Triple J Unearthed's Indigenous Initiative, heard her song Vague Utopia played on radio several times and got to hang out with idols like Thelma Plum.

In February, she was nominated six times across four categories at the Queensland Music Awards.

She picked up gongs for the folk/singer-songwriter and schools categories.

"It's really crazy. I'm very grateful for it. I didn't expect anything like this to happen,” she told Newscorp at the time.

She joined a slew of statewide nominees including Leanne Tennant, Amy Shark, Club Sport, Dubmarine, Confidence Man, Good Boy, Hanlon Brothers and ROMY.

Tia performed at the event, along with several others. It's a big change from last year, when she was finishing her Year 12 studies at high school.

When she's not playing shows, she still lives at home with her family, who moved to Mackay in 2010 from Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Her single Vague Utopia was recently featured as part of Triple J Unearthed's top 10 "ones to watch” list of 2017.

"I wrote about all those feelings anybody has when they're about to finish high school,” she said. "They're not really sure what's going to happen asfter.”

Tia will join Bernard Fanning on his Brutal Dawn tour at The Triffid in Brisbane on October 18. Tickets via www.thetriffid.com.au
