Mackay players miss out

VOLLEYBALL: Top class volleyballers from Queensland hit the sand at Citibeach Volleyball Mackay for another round of the Queensland Beach Volleyball Tour.

The teams were grateful for cool conditions and the cool breeze last Friday night which reduced the effects of the blistering sun during Saturday's matches.

With 10 men's and seven ladies' teams, the premier and challenger divisions were rolled into a single competition. By early afternoon, the ladies' pool play had finished and semi-finals had begun. In the ladies grand-final, after struggling in the first set 10-18, the combination of Sonya Kyte and Megan Bradnum, from Mackay, regained some momentum taking the second set from Anicia Henne and Gabriela de Jesus Amaral, 18-16.

This pushed the game into a deciding third set.

Unfortunately the visitors triumphant 12-10.

The men's final was between last year's winners Daniel Brownsey and Greg Venz and the well-rounded and very athletic Sam Duniam and Jake Robson.

The match was a war of attrition with both teams suffering cramps having already played five games.

There were some impressive hits, blocks and jousts at the net by both Robson and Venz.

The Mackay team's unorthodox style gave them an early lead allowing them to take the first set, surprising the southern team who dropped their first set of the day.

The second set saw Duniam and Robson dig deep to comeback from a five-point deficit to win 19-17.

In the third the Mackay team started well but the visitors came back to seal the win and the tournament 12-10.
