Mackay Cutters ready to get physical

Rugby league: The Mackay Cutters have a "point to prove" and plan on letting their physicality and aggression do the talking against Redcliffe on Saturday.

After a disappointing loss against the Sunshine Coast in their last home game a fortnight ago, a rejuvenated Cutters head to BB Print on Saturday on the back of a physical 10-point win over the Ipswich Jets.

Planning on righting their wrongs from the Falcons' game where fans were seen leaving early, QCCS Cutters coach Steve Sheppard said the side had undergone a "realignment", and would be ready to meet the imposing and aggressive Dolphins head on.

"We did a lot more contact and physical stuff during the week to get us to where we needed to be," Sheppard said.

"We looked a lot more fluent (against Ipswich), our attitude was completely different, and our forwards went forward with plenty of aggression.

"But Redcliffe are a very good side and very physical, so we need to make sure we match them there and fight fire with fire."

The Cutters will have to do without second-rower Shane Wright, who broke his scapula in the side's win over Ipswich.

Wright, who has signed a contract extension with the North Queensland Cowboys until 2020, is expected to miss around six weeks.

Lona Kaifoto will start in the number 12 in Wright's absence, while either Darcy Cox or Jesse Dee will fill the number 14 spot.

Coming off a 20-6 victory over reigning premiers PNG, the equal third-placed Dolphins pose a significant challenge, but Sheppard said the side would look to build on the solid progress made against Ipswich.

"We're still a bit off where we can be, but it was a good step in right direction," he said.

"We won with only 40% possession of the ball, and that shows how good our attitude in defence was against probably best attacking team in the competition.

"But this week is a different challenge, so we need to show we're mentally ready to go."

While looking to switch on mentally, the Cutters won't need any extra motivation against the Dolphins, with news that the game would be club legend Tony Gambe's last.

Wanting to show "energy and attitude", Sheppard said the side would aim to send Gambe, who has long lead the side in singing the club song after every win, out in style.

"We want to put in a good performance for him (Gambe)... the boys love him and he's been here (basically) since day one," he said.

After Cutters' players were left "shattered" following the fan exodus in their loss to the Falcons, Sheppard said the side also wanted to repay the faithful.

"We were disappointed with our performance against the Sunny Coast, and we weren't ourselves," he said.

"Our fans are a big priority and that's the whole idea of rugby league, to go out and give them something to cheer for on the weekends... so we need to make sure we fix that up."
