Mackay Council back new parking fee for trucks

A PLAN to impose a $445 parking fee on some heavy vehicle owners in the Mackay region will once again go to public consultation.

The law, if adopted by the council, will force owners of a light rigid (LR) vehicle with a mass more than 8 tonnes to pay a $445 permit fee, unless they can meet specific criteria.

The criteria includes parking forward in and forward out of a residence and screening the vehicle from the view of neighbours.

At the Mackay Regional Council's monthly meeting, it was resolved that further state and public consultation will be needed before the local law is implemented.

Councillor Laurence Bonaventura has no problem with the proposed fee, however he has real concerns with how the law will exclude some small business owners.

Councillor Amanda Camm said she was hoping the next public consultation will result in vehicle owners applying for the council permit.
