Tonight's lunar spectacle should be out of this world
TURN off the television tonight, Gympie, grab the family and head outside to admire a lunar marvel.
The Earth currently lies directly between the Sun and the Moon, giving the lunar surface a pinkish hue.
Gympie residents noticed the change in appearance of the full moon Tuesday night and Facebook became awash with photos from moon gazers.
Dubbed a Strawberry Moon by Native American Algonquin tribes, the different name given to this kind of full moon in June was seen as a signal to begin gathering ripening spring fruits and vegetables, such as strawberries and peas.
In other parts of the world where the time is not right for harvesting, this kind of moon has carried many different monikers.
In Europe, it is called a rose moon, but also goes by the name of honey moon or mead moon.
The Strawberry Moon will continue to attract attention for the remainder of the week.
Remember to pack warm clothes when heading out to admire the Strawberry Moon as the temperature drops to five degrees tonight and six tomorrow.
