Toowoomba set for lunar delight

STARGAZERS around Toowoomba will be praying for a clear night tomorrow night so they can tilt their heads to the heavens and witness an astronomical marvel.

The second lunar eclipse this year will cause the moon to turn red as it slips into the earth's darkest shadow.

The spectacle will be visible only in Australia and Asia with Australia's east coast being the best viewing region.

Those who miss the eclipse will have to wait until 2014 for a repeat performance.

People will be able to see the moon slowly turn a dusty-red colour just before midnight on Saturday night.

The event is expected to last until 3am Sunday morning.
