THE biggest blockbuster to hit cinemas this year took a little while to rev up in Rockhampton.

Batman: The Dark Knight Rises raked in a half-packed cinema crowd at the North Rockhampton Cinemas on Wednesday at midnight for the official release.

North Rockhampton Cinemas acting general manager Rominesh Ayre said he expected at least 200 movie-goers on the three-hour film's opening night but only 150 showed up.

"The weekend Batman screenings picked up significantly," he said. "It is a three-hour movie and people weren't up to watching a movie at that time of the morning."

He said the Colorado cinema massacre had not affected numbers.
