Lotto sales go gangbusters with $66m jackpot on the line

JUDGING by its co-owners' Lotto-driven antics, customers at North Mackay News aren't the only ones excited by this week's massive Powerball and Gold Lotto jackpots.

It's not unusual to see Mark Faulkner out on the corner of the road near his Evans Ave shop, waving a Lotto placard like a madman, spurred on by honks and hoots.

While it's often sweaty work, he reckons it's all worth it - especially when there's a cool $66 million on the line.

Mr Faulkner - who co-owns the shop with his partner Mariann Hartup - said usual lottery sales have already doubled ahead of Thursday's $35 million Powerball and Saturday's $31 million Gold Lotto draws.

"We've already sold a lot of tickets before Christmas and now, in the lead-up to the draws,” he said.

"And because it's Christmas we've been selling even more than usual. People also tend to pick them up for last-minute Christmas presents.”

Ms Hartup added: 'And what we often do is send Mark down to the corner with the jackpot written on a board, waving it about, like the pizza guys do”.

"Everyone thinks it's fantastic. But we're never quite sure whether he's on the corner, or down at the Kooyong (Hotel),” she laughed.

"But by the feedback we realised he hasn't ducked in for a beer, he's still there waving it about.”

Mr Faulkner and Ms Hartup are hopeful the rush of ticket sales, partially driven by Mr Faulkner's efforts, will lead to a winning purchase from their store.

It's not the first time, with one lucky customer scoring $1.1 million back in March, much to Mr Faulkner and Ms Hartup's excitement.

"It's everyone's dream to win the Lotto, Ms Hartup said.

"I don't think we've had a jackpot this big for quite a while. You can see it generates a lot of interest and excitement.”

Ms Hartup said when their customer won the $1.1 million "we were almost, or maybe more, excited than they were”.
