Looking back on 50 years in Marcoola

MARCOOLA, it's time to take a trip down memory lane and head back to the swinging '60s.

On July 1, the Marcoola Progress Association will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a '60's themed party at the Marcoola Surf Club.

Association president Susie Chapman said the event aimed to showcase residents' memories of the beachside enclave.

"It certainly promises to be a fun afternoon, not only because of the popular '60's theme but also as we are encouraging residents past and present to share their memories and experiences with us in the lead-up to the event to help us create a colourful and diverse history of our area,” she said.

"Marcoola has always enjoyed a wonderful sense of community and everyone we've approached about this event has been very keen to get involved, including former Marcoola local and well-known TV personality, Scott Hillier who will be our MC on the day.

"With the support of local businesses who share our strong connection to Marcoola such as the Marcoola Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, North Shore Realty and the Marcoola Surf Club, we are able to offer the community a free, catered, themed event to celebrate our great milestone and thank everyone for their support.”

The Marcoola Progress Association Inc was founded on July 2, 1967 and was established to assist local authorities in the improvement and development of the Marcoola Beach region.

The association has also played a role in community advocacy, instigating projects such as drainage and bitumen roadworks, sunshade covers of the Felix Parry Park Playground, barbecue upgrades and more.

Sally Johnson joined the group in 1972 and today is the oldest member of the Marcoola Progress Association still living locally.

"Marcoola has always been such a special and unique community, I guess because we're tucked away,” she said.

"We've never had much crime here; it's a pretty safe and friendly community.”

Members of the public are invited to both attend the event and submit photos and memories of the beachside village.
